12/17/20 When I put this site together, I fully expected to update this page regularly and for it to be the place where I would regale you with exciting stories of my running adventures. Before the pandemic times began, I was slated to run some big races (Bighorn 100 and Tillamook Burn 50 mi) some smaller local races, and to pace, crew and volunteer at various other events. But the reality of 2020 has been different and I’m not ready to travel and participate in any event or gathering until I know it’s safe–for myself and for the community.
Instead, I’ve learned to be flexible.
I ran 1000k across Tennessee virtually to benefit Feeding America as a part of The Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee. When I got to the end, I “turned around” and ran back.
I make my own events. Masked and distanced, I’ve explored the city of Chicago on foot, covering around 3,000 total miles this year. Most of these miles have been solo. Some have been with 1-3 close, conscientious and also masked and distanced friends. It’s been a time of reflection and discovery for me, so I started a blog. The stories I share there document the (sometimes unexpected) consequences of my personal journey as I try to process our shared current experience.
And since I have some of my best thoughts on the trail, on the move, I’ll send you there.
4/5/19 I also like to run. Far, if possible.
I accidentally trained for my first Way Too Cool 50k in 2015, which I ran before the trail half marathon I had signed up for. Since then I’ve run ten 50k’s, one 50 miler, three 100k’s and two 100 mile trail ultramarathons plus a few shorter fun runs including some overnight and timed endurance events. Also the Chicago Marathon (Go Alz Stars!).
This June I’ll be attempting my first true mountain hundred miler at Scout Mountain in Idaho. Leading up to it, I’ll be running all the distances in-between and climbing some towers in downtown Chicago for the American Lung Association.
I’ll share more about it sometime when I’m not out for a run.
